Disputed United States-funded GHF Aid Organization Terminates Relief Activities
The debated, American and Israeli-supported Gaza relief foundation announces it is winding down its aid operations in the Gaza region, following nearly half a year.
The foundation had already suspended its multiple aid distribution centers in Gaza subsequent to the halt in hostilities between Palestinian factions and Israel took effect in recent weeks.
The GHF aimed to bypass the UN as the primary provider of humanitarian assistance to Gazans.
International relief agencies would not collaborate with its system, stating it was unethical and unsafe.
Hundreds of Palestinians were fatally wounded while trying to acquire nourishment amid disorderly situations near GHF's sites, mainly through Israeli military action, based on UN documentation.
Israeli authorities stated its forces fired warning shots.
Operation Conclusion
The foundation announced on Monday that it was concluding activities now because of the "successful completion of its emergency mission", with a total of three million packages containing the equivalent of more than 187 million meals delivered to Palestinians.
The organization's top administrator, the foundation leader, further mentioned the American-directed Civil-Military Coordination Center - which has been set up to help execute the American administration's Gaza initiative - would be "adopting and expanding the model GHF piloted".
"The organization's system, in which militant groups were prevented from misappropriating relief supplies, had major impact in bringing Palestinian factions to negotiations and establishing a truce."
Comments and Positions
The militant group - which disputes allegations of misappropriation - welcomed the closure of the aid organization, as indicated by media.
An official from stated the foundation should be subject to scrutiny for the negative impact it created to local residents.
"We request all international human rights organisations to ensure that it does not escape accountability after causing the death and injury of numerous Palestinians and covering up the nutritional restriction approach implemented by the Israeli authorities."
Operational Background
The GHF began operations in Gaza on late May, a week after Israel had partially eased a total blockade on relief and commercial goods to Gaza that continued for 77 days and led to substantial deficiencies of essential supplies.
Subsequently, a nutritional emergency was proclaimed in the Palestinian urban center.
The GHF's food distribution sites in the southern and middle regions of Gaza were managed by United States-based protection companies and located inside Israeli military zones.
Aid Organization Objections
United Nations agencies and their collaborators claimed the approach contravened the basic relief guidelines of neutrality, impartiality and independence, and that directing needy individuals into militarised zones was intrinsically hazardous.
United Nations human rights division stated it documented the fatalities of no fewer than 859 Gazans seeking food in the proximity to foundation locations between late May through end of July.
A further 514 persons were fatally wounded around the routes of UN and other aid convoys, it added.
The majority of these individuals were lost their lives due to the Israeli military, according to the office.
Conflicting Accounts
Israel's armed services stated its troops had discharged cautionary rounds at people who approached them in a "menacing" fashion.
The GHF said there were no firearm incidents at the relief locations and claimed the international organization of using "untrue and confusing" data from the Gazan medical department controlled by militant factions.
Subsequent Developments
The foundation's prospects had been unclear since Palestinian factions and Israeli authorities consented a ceasefire deal to carry out the first phase of the American administration's peace initiative.
The agreement stated relief provision would take place "without interference from the two parties through the international bodies and their affiliates, and the international relief society, in conjunction with other worldwide bodies not associated in any manner" with militant groups and the Israeli government.
United Nations representative the UN spokesman declared this week that the GHF's shutdown would have "zero effect" on its work "because we never worked with them".
The official further mentioned that while more aid was getting into Gaza since the halt in hostilities began on early October, it was "insufficient to satisfy all requirements" of the 2.1 million residents.
