A renowned South African media personality and entertainer has been fatally gunned down in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, causing national outrage across a nation struggling with entrenched crime.

Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was gunned down in the city centre on the afternoon of Tuesday.

Officials stated the 40-year-old entertainer was confronted by three suspects, with one began shooting at him before escaping on foot.

The purpose of the shooting remains unclear and no suspects have been apprehended are in custody, according to authorities.

How It Happened

Authorities said that Stock was attacked as he was exiting a location near the Carlton Centre.

He had spent several hours at the building overseeing the implementation of safety equipment, which had been controversially occupied by squatters, according to reports.

"The report indicates the deceased was confronted by three unknown suspects after parking his vehicle, and they opened fire at him before fleeing the scene on foot," a police statement confirmed.

Surveillance tape showed a suspect with dreadlocks and clad in what appeared to be a guard's attire shooting on Stock before running away.

The DJ tried to run away after he was hit but fell down on the opposite side of the road.

It was further revealed that Stock had an unused firearm and no items were stolen during the assault.

Crucial forensic evidence, like bullet casings, were discovered at the scene.

Police have appealed anyone who saw the event who may have seen the suspects to contact them.

"We know they traveled on foot after the attack, and officers have been tracking them to establish their destination," added an official.

His sister, Nicole Stock, said the loved ones are reeling to process his death.

"I am devastated. I cannot express the pain," were her words.
"It is clear he was a voice for many people. He addressed issues courageously about topics not many people were willing to discuss. This is a profound tragedy."
