Line of Duty Announced for Seventh Series on BBC
The beloved crime series AC-12 will make a comeback for its seventh season, announced by the broadcaster.
A brand new six-episode series created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the network.
The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."
The previous season wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that attracted over 17 million audience members. Speculation about a potential return have been circulating for some time, but confirmation only arrived recently.
New Challenges for AC-12
Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.
Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to tackle misconduct within the police force.
The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case so far."
New Character and Intricate Plot
A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer celebrated for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.
However, this investigation might serve as a intentional diversion from a larger danger still active in the shadows, the teaser hinted.
In a statement, Jed Mercurio commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the show's fans."
"We're privileged to have had so many fans track the developments of the unit over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new season."
He added: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been forced to use my imagination."
Actor Responses
Martin Compston called being part of the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".
"Not only the program's popularity but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."
"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he said.
Vicky McClure remarked: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with the creator, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"
The veteran actor noted: "While anticipating the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."
"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those mercurial twists and turns."
Show History
Line of Duty premiered in the early 2010s and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the past ten years, attracting notable actors such as Stephen Graham.
Broadcasters haven't revealed when the upcoming series will premiere.
The conclusion of season six brought the extended plot about the search for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and producers said at the moment there were no intentions for further series.
However, the network confirmed on this week that a new season is now being produced.
