Liverpool's Manager Offers Zero Justifications and Pledges to Find Route From Slump
Liverpool's head coach declared he needed to “look at myself” following Liverpool suffered a 6th loss in seven Premier League matches at home to Forest and insisted he would discover a solution from the champions’ slump.
Forest, fighting against the drop prior to the match, produced the biggest victory at Liverpool's stadium in their history as Liverpool fell to an 8th defeat in 11 fixtures in every tournament. The British record signing, the Swedish striker, was again unnoticeable and the home side argued the defender's first goal should have been ruled out for similar reasons to Virgil van Dijk’s disallowed effort versus City prior to the international break. But the manager admitted the buck stopped with him and made no excuses.
“Nobody wants to listen to me now speaking about officiating calls if you are defeated 3-0 in your own stadium to Nottingham Forest,” stated the Reds' boss. “I should examine my own role first and my team, but it does show you how a goal can alter the flow of a match. Before I was just hoping for us to net a goal. Afterwards we barely created anything.
“Of course there is a way out, particularly with the quality footballers we have. Regardless if you triumph or are beaten when you reflect you are always thinking: ‘Where can we improve, where can we make changes?’ but that is different from doubting yourself.
“I wish to emphasise I am responsible for the present losses. You are responsible when you are victorious but also liable when you are losing. I can never come up with enough excuses for us to have the results we have. That is far from good enough and I am responsible for that.”
Liverpool’s display fell apart as the coach introduced several offensive changes when pursuing the game. “It was the identical away at Nottingham Forest the previous campaign,” he said. “I took Ibou [Ibrahima Konaté] off and put on [Diogo] Jota and he found the net straight away to make it 1-1. Then it was courageous, now it’s probably stupid.”
Liverpool previously were defeated in two successive at Anfield league fixtures against Forest in the sixties. The most recent occasion they lost consecutive league games by a 3-0 margin was in the mid-60s.
Slot said: “It was very bad. Playing at home, losing 3-0 regardless of which opponent you encounter is a terrible result. Surprising if you consider the opening 30 minutes of the game. I haven’t seen us producing so much in the opening 30 minutes perhaps the entire season, and the first time they entered in our box they scored.
“It did not happen against Manchester City, but in every other fixture we have been the dominant side and were able to create opportunities. Recently it is nearly consistently that we fail to convert our chances and the attempts we allow find the net.”
