New York City Mayor Eric Adams to Endorse Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayoral Race
NYC's current mayor Eric Adams declared his plan to endorse Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral race, despite months of disagreements between the pair of Democrats.
A Surprising Reversal After Recent Criticism
Only weeks ago, the mayor had lashed out at the former governor, calling him a “snake and a untruthful person” and alleging of having “a history of pushing Black candidates out of races.” Yet, in a new development, Adams made a U-turn, stating he now intends to appear with Cuomo in areas where he holds significant backing.
“It is crucial to mobilize the Black and brown communities that have suffered from gentrification on how important this election is,” the mayor remarked.
The mayor further explained, “They have watched their housing costs rise in terms of neighborhood changes and they have been overlooked in those neighborhoods, and I’m going to go to those neighborhoods and speak one on one with organizers and organizations and I will appear with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them involved.”
Race Dynamics and Current Developments
The election battle has so far been shaped by the competition between Cuomo and progressive candidate his main rival, whose growing support has drawn interest globally and symbolized hopes for a rejuvenated progressive wing of the Democrats.
In a recent candidate forum, both the democratic socialist and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa announced they would refuse the mayor's support if offered.
Months ago, the mayor had begun his re-election campaign as an independent after being indicted on federal corruption charges which were later thrown out in return for his assistance with government enforcement actions across New York City.
At an separate media briefing on Thursday, Adams answered reporters asking about the endorsement plan by saying, “I’ll be with Andrew later today.”
This development followed a day after Adams and Cuomo were spotted sitting courtside together at the the NBA team's first game at the famous arena, which occurred right after a contentious candidate debate.
